Actually calculators are useful. The thing is that way too many students use it to add 1/2 and 1/2 and to multiply 7 and 4. That type of use is just unacceptable. In my math classes my students can not use a calculator? Why you ask? That answer is as simple as can be--because it is a math class and you need to use math.

You are perfectly correct. Math is doing, not plugging.
 
I would rather say that math is not doing, it is thinking. If you think, and then use a calculator to do the part of the doing that requires it, then you are doing well. If you expect the calculator to do the thinking for you, then you are likely either doing it wrong, or just not learning to think.
