Before I move on, is it fixed now?( I add the two pre-tax prices and kept the variable )

No, this is incorrect.
Let's look at a simpler equation. Please solve and verify the answer: 7=1+2x

6=2x
6/2=x
x=3

7=1+2(3)
7=1+6
7=7
