So... what were all the topics covered in class over the past two weeks? We can't begin to provide lesson instruction without that list.

When you reply, please also include whatever topics were covered shortly before your hospitalization, for which you also need lessons. Thank you! ;)

O is a point. So what on earth does it mean for AB to be parallel to O????????????

I can only assume that AB is parallel to the y-axis. In that case, then for some arbitrary x value, let's call it a, what is the length of AB?

From the diagram it's pretty clear that they mean AB is parallel to the y-axis.

For any given x, between the points where the line and the parabola intersect, the distance AB is given by \(\displaystyle (x+3)-\frac{1}{2}x^2\)

You need to maximise this expression.

So let \(\displaystyle h = (x+3)-\frac{1}{2}x^2 \).

1. Use graphing software or a GC to draw a graph and locate the max point

2. Use calculus to find the maximum h

3. Devise another way
