Direct Comparison vs. Limit Comparison

So I really understand how to use both, but when is the appropriate time to use a Limit Comparison rather than a Direct Comparison? I've done countless of problems already and I still haven't seen the trend yet.

This article explains that the Limit Comparison Test is used when the direct Comparison Test isn't helpful. If you can't find anything helpful for a direct comparison, then maybe you can find something that's helpful in ratio form.
