I think your problem at this point is that you haven't been exposed to implicit differentiation, which is what skeeter did. If all you know is the chain rule itself, then follow my post #4, and ignore the other method. You'll get there.

I suspect he may mean that in teaching, you need to speak the learner's language, and not talk past them.

Yes! This is definitely the case - I have not learnt implicit differentiation...
I understand how to do post #4 and I did do that to answer the question, so I will just stick to that and not worry about the other method.
