Hello all,
I have been stumped on a division problem from my year 7 exercise book. After multiple attempts of trying to solve it I'm still stuck on what should be a fairly simple question. I have been trying to get my head around converting the numbers into fractions and following with reciprocals, but I'm still not doing something right. The question is as follows: 3 divided by 3 divided by 3 divided by 3 divided by 3.

3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3

My working out.

3 divided by 3 = 1
1 divided by 3 = 1/1 * 3/1 = 3/1
3/1 * 3/1 = 9/1
9/1 * 3/1 = 27/1

The answer section at the back of the book informs me that the correct answer is 1/27, yet I'm completely confused as to where I went wrong. Could someone please help me with the working out.

Thank you for your time and help,

Ed

3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3

= 3* 1/3 * 1/3 * 1/3 * 1/3

= 1 * 1/3 * 1/3 * 1/3

= 1/3 * 1/3 * 1/3

= 1/27

To elaborate slightly on what Subhotosh Khan posted, you seem to be saying it correctly but doing the opposite
3 divided by 3 = 3/3 = 1
divided by three = (1)/3 = (1) * (1/3) = 1/3
divided by three = (1/3) / 3 = (1/3)*(1/3) = 1/9
divided by three = (1/9) / 3 = (1/9)*(1/3) = 1/27

3 divided by 3 = 1
1 divided by 3 = 1/1 * 3/1 = 3/1
But 1/1 = 1 and 3/1 = 3, so 1/1 * 3/1 = 1 * 3. How did you get that "1 divided by 3" equalled 1 multiplied by 3?
