x+y+z+a = 16480

x=y+ 1\2z
y=a-z
z=3x
a=y+z
find a,x,y,z

See i try subbing into the top but i always have too many variable and anything else at the point undos something. I think i am missing a place where i can simplify. Please help. Any tips or anything will be appreciated.

We'll be glad to help you with the mathematics involved in solving this latest Lenny Conundrum (Round 171), but you will need to show some work. (And, in accordance with Neopets apparent policy, we will not be providing you with the solution before the contest closes and prizes are awarded.)

A good place to start would be in defining what your variables stand for, so we can at least check whether your equations make any sense.

When you reply, please list the method(s) for solving systems of equations with which you are familiar, specifying if there is a particular method you prefer. Also, please explain what you mean by "too many variables", since a system of five equations in four variables should not have "too many" unknowns. Showing your work thus far would be very helpful.

Thank you.

Eliz.
