2 planes are 4350 miles apart. There is 70mph difference. In 5 hours they will pass each other. How do I calcuate how fast they are traveling. PLease simplify. I just don't get this written questions!

2 planes are 4350 miles apart. There is 70mph difference. In 5 hours they will pass each other. How do I calcuate how fast they are traveling. PLease simplify. I just don't get this written questions!

Let us assume those are flying in opposite directions:

The faster plane is travelling at a speed of = F mph

The slower plane is travelling at a speed of = F-70 mph

Then

In 5 hours, the faster plane has travelled a distance of = 5 * F miles

In 5 hours, the slower plane has travelled a distance of = 5 * (F -70) miles

Then:

5 * F + 5 * (F - 70) = 4350

Now solve for F (and F-70).....
