writing paper on 'like terms': when they are needed and why

We need like tike terms to add or subtract. We don't need like terms to multiply or divide. Why

any suggestion or help would be great because i have no clue as where to start. I am supposed to write a paper on this and i am a bit puzzled.

Yes: Spend some time studying the topic (as you are apparently expected to do on your own), and then write up your impressions.

A comparison with fractions of like and unlike denominators might be something your teacher likes. But naturally only you know what your teacher likely wants, and only you can write your paper.
