Hello,

I look at these problems and I dont even know where to start. Any assistance will be helpful. Thanks

Evaluate the formula P=2L+3W

Find P if L= 6 1/2 Ft and W= 4 1/4 Ft

r2-s2

R= -2
S=-6

The answer is -32 according to my quiz.. but i keep getting positive 32. WHY

Hello,

Evaluate the formula P=2L+3W

Find P if L= 6 1/2 Ft and W= 4 1/4 Ft

r2-s2

R= -2
S=-6

The answer is -32 according to my quiz.. but i keep getting positive 32. WHY

A "formula" usually involves one or more variables (letters which take the place of numbers) and at least one arithmetic operation.

For example,

P = 2L + 3W gives the directions for finding the value of P when one knows the values of L and W. The formula says, "multiply the value of L by 2. Multiply the value of W by 3. Add those two results to get the value of P."

Now, you are told that L = 6 1/2 feet and W = 4 1/4 feet. You're asked to evaluate the formula, which means to find the value of P by following the instructions. Multiply the value of L by 2: 2 * (6 1/2 feet). Multiply the value of W by 3: 3 * (4 1/4 feet). Add those results together to get the value of P. It is really just an arithmetic problem. If you're still having trouble with this one, show us your work, and tell us where you are "stuck."

On the second problem, where you have written "r2 - s2," I THINK you mean for those 2s to be EXPONENTS:

r2 - s2

You are told that r = -2 and s = -6. Substitute those values into the formula (and be SURE to enclose those negative values in parentheses):

r2 - s2
(-2)2 - (-6)2

And again, this is just arithmetic. We need to see how you DID that arithmetic in order to understand why you are having trouble with this one. Please show your work, so we can see where your problems lie.

Note that \(\displaystyle (-6)^2\) is positive so that \(\displaystyle -(-6)^2\) is negative.
