If any of you guys could explain how to do these I would appreciate it so much.

1) Nine members of a finance committee could not get together to meet on an emergency basis. However, during the next three days, each member was able to talk to each other member on the telephone. What is the minimum number of phone calls needed to accomplish that?

2) Carissa is building a new dining room table. The center of it is a rectangular section made from polished rocks. That section measures 36 in. by 64 in. She is also going to place wooden, eight-inch rectangular lip all the way around the perimeter. What is the area of the wooden part?

3) The Cowboy Ranch has a new owner. The 30 animals, all ostriches and horses, are dismayed, as they have heard that he is both foolish and inexperienced. Not being quite sure what he was looking for, however, he checked on the health of his animals by inspecting all of their feet. There were 96 feet in all. How many ostriches are there on this ranch?

:D

1) How many calls must the first guy make? Now consider the second guy. He's already talked to the first guy. How many calls must he make? Now consider the third guy.... and so forth.

2) Draw a rectangle. Label with the given dimensions. Draw another rectangle around it. Label the gap with the given width. What are the new (total) dimensions? Subtract the inner area from the total area to find the outer area.

3) The thirty animals each have two feet. How many feet does that account for? Which animals have more than two feet? How many more? How many feet remain (after having accounted for the first two feet of every animal)? How many of which animal does this represent? How many of the other animal does this mean that you have?
