not sure where to begin: A girl saved about $15 on a dress that was 30% off. What was the price she paid for the dress?

What do you need to FIND - assign a "symbol" to that ....Continue

Let [MATH]x[/MATH] be the original price.

[MATH]x - $15 = [/MATH] paid price

What is the relationship between [MATH]x, $15, [/MATH] and [MATH]30[/MATH]%?

To put this another way, in case you aren't ready to use x:

When an item is 30% off, that means you save 30% of the price. If the amount she saved is $15, that means that 30% of the price is $15. Is that a kind of problem you know how to solve?
