I cannot remember how to extract an equation from the following:There are 11,883,297 total population and New York has 4,285,335 more than LA - what are the populations and the corresponding equation.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Matt:

I don't recognize anything in this exercise having to do with inequalities, so I'm going to ignore your subject line.

New York's population has been defined in terms of Los Angeles', so pick a symbol to represent Los Angeles' population. You can then use that symbol to write an expression for New York's population, by adding 4285335 to the symbol.

For example: I have 5 more dimes than quarters, and the total of my dimes and quarters is $1.20 .

Here, the number of dimes is defined in terms of the number of quarters. In other words, adding 5 to the number of quarters gives the number of dimes.

So, pick a symbol to represent the number of quarters.

Q = the number of quarters

Q + 5 = the number of dimes

Now that we have expressions for the number of both quarters and dimes, we can write an equation to solve for Q.

0.25*Q + 0.10*(Q + 5) = 1.20

Does this example sufficiently jog your memory? 8-)

Cheers,

~ Mark
