Ok here is the word problem:
Premium gasoline sells for 78.9 cents per litre. Regular gas sells for 71.9 cents per litre. To boost sales, a middle octane gasoline is formed by mixing premium and regular. If 1000 Litres of this middle octane gas is produced, and is sold at 73.9 cents per litre, then how much of each type of gasoline can you assume was used in the mixture?
ok so the answer is 600 litres for premium and 400 litres for regular...how do i get that?...we are supposed to write 2 equations and then solve them...but i can't figure out the right equations. I am confused. Please Help. Thank you.

Is this the COMPLETE problem ?

Please read your post and the original problem - then confirm or edit.

yes this is the complete problem.
i know its too hard and confusing! my teacher doesn't explain anything! Somebody please try and help me. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

If your problem statement is accurate and the answer is correct - then the dealer is losing money.

I don't think that is meant to happen....

The "answer" makes no sense.
Let's say you mixed P gallons of premium and R gallons of regular, and you've mixed 1000 gallons, so P+R=1000.
The harder part for you may be to write that the mixture at 73.9 cents/gallon costs the same as P gallons at 78.9 cents and R gallons at 71.9 cents.
Try it.
