A camper drove 90 miles to a recreational area and then hiked 5 miles into the woods. The rate of the camper while driving was nine times the rate while hiking. The time spent hiking and driving was 3 hours. Find the rate at which the camper hiked.

I am having trouble figuring out how to translate this information into a formula.
Thanks for any help.

From V = D/T, T = 3 = 90/Vd + 5/Vw = 90/9Vw + 5/Vw

Solve for Vw

TchrWill, the way you gave that formula confuses me could you clarify it more.

You should know this relationship: distance = rate * time
So, distance / rate = time

Let x = rate at which he hiked
Then 9x = rate at which he drove

time hiking = 5/x
time driving = 90/9x

total time is 3 hours.

(5/x) + (90/9x) = 3
