In Atlanta, Georgia the record low temperature is -9 degrees Fahrenheit and the record high is 105 degrees Fahrenheit. What is the temperature difference between these records?

105- (-9) =105+9=114

I guess my main question is why was this method used to solve the problem? After reading the problem, I would have thought subtraction was the correct operation, which led me to an incorrect answer.
