Here is a word problem that I have been working on for the past 2 days. I have a very hard time with these type of problems so will you please look at my work and see if I am anywhere near being correct?

Problem: A hospital parking lot charges $4.00 per hour for the first hour or part thereof, and $2.00 for each additional hour or part thereof. A weekly pass costs $38.00 and allows unlimited parking for 7 days. If each visit Jonny makes to the hospital last two and one-half hours, what is the minimum numer of visits that would make it worthwhile to buy a pass?

I said 15.2 hours

here is my work: with h for hour and d for dollars I did the following: ( this was the best of all I did)

38d divided by 2.5h = 15.2h

4d + 2.5h = 8d divided by 38d =4.75d = 60.8
60.8d - 38d = 22.8d which is the amount Jonny would save in a month by buying a pass.

Actually should the answer be 0? Because if Jonny buys a monthly pass for $38.00 he will have unlimited parking for 7 days out of that month?

I am really confused and would appreciate any help I can get.

Thank you,
Cyndi

Re: help on algebra 1 please

hi cyndi
by each visit of 2,5 hours.
1. 4d by the first hour.
2. 2d+1d by the second hour and a half.
total=7d.
if you divide 38/7=5.42 visitors.
if he has six visits, or more, to buy the pass
