Why Pre Algebra is called Pre Algebra

Since we have many people here, from around the world, many of whom do not use English as their first language, perhaps the problem is with the prefix "pre"? "Pre" is a latin-based term meaning "before" (indeed it is the first part of "prefix" itself- a "prefix" is something that is added to the beginning of a word). So "pre-algebra" is a course that is studied just before algebra, typically as (as Denis said) an introduction to algebra. Similarly for "PreCalculus".

What about pretend.... prevent.....

Clearly when one puts log in the fireplace, makes certain the flue is clear, before lighting, one is "pretending" the fire! And, obviously, when we open a vent to let the smoke out we are "preventing"!

I think of pre-algebra topics as ones that people need to know before they begin studying algebra.

However, not all schools are the same. For example, some schools teach square roots in pre-algebra; other schools wait until algebra to teach square roots. Some schools do not even teach a pre-algebra course; they mix everything together.

I'm not sure why you posted this question, but perhaps some of these Google results will help answer it.

I am thinking of a clever comeback - but it is escaping me.

all I could think was that
