Since we have many people here, from around the world, many of whom do not use English as their first language, perhaps the problem is with the prefix "pre"? "Pre" is a latin-based term meaning "before" (indeed it is the first part of "prefix" itself- a "prefix" is something that is added to the beginning of a word). So "pre-algebra" is a course that is studied just before algebra, typically as (as Denis said) an introduction to algebra. Similarly for "PreCalculus".
Clearly when one puts log in the fireplace, makes certain the flue is clear, before lighting, one is "pretending" the fire! And, obviously, when we open a vent to let the smoke out we are "preventing"!What about pretend.... prevent.....
