What the hoot is an asymptote?

So like the title says I'm having trouble guessing what an asymptote is, and if I'm close by saying that it's like the vertex of a line.

If I wanted to know something like that, I'd go to Google and type in "What is an asymptote?"

The first hit I got is very good: https://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/asymptote.html

If you have further questions, write back and refer to that or another source that you are trying to follow.

Then I would be inclined to say that you also do not know what the word "vertex" means. A line does NOT have a "vertex"!

According to the website Dr. Peterson linked to, an asymptote is a line, not any part of a line.

"An asymptote is a line that a curve approaches as it heads toward infinity."
