The system
2x - 3y = 6
4x - 6y = 8
is

a. independent
b. inconsistent
c. dependent
d. none of these

I have no clue what it is

Try solving the system.

If you get "x = (something) and y = (something else)", then the system is "independent".

If you get something along the lines of "0 = 0" or "3 = 3" (that is, something true, but irrelevant), then the system is actually the same line twice, and is therefore "dependent".

If you get something along the lines of "0 = 3" or "-4 = 7" (that is, something nonsensical), then the system is actually two parallel lines, and is therefore "inconsistent".

There is no "none of these"; it has to be one of the above.

What did you get when you solved the system?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. Which variable to you find to be equal to zero, x or y? And what did you get for the other variable? And, if you've found numbers for the variables, then (reviewing my first reply) what sort of system would that be?

Please reply with clarification. Thank you.

Eliz.

Given:
2x - 3y = 6
4x - 6y = 8

Multiply the first by 2: 4x−6y=12.
But we are given 4x−6y=8 so the system is inconsistent!
