I was talking to my friend, and he was inquiring about an equation/function where something doubles every day over a period of one month. So on the first you have 1, on the 2nd 2, on the 3rd 4, on the the 4th 8 etc. It's driving me nuts, I know I know the answer...Help!

\(\displaystyle \sum_{n=0}^{30} 2^{n} \ = \ 1+2+4+8+16+32+...+ \ = \ 2^{n+1}-1 \ or \ f(x) \ = \ 2^{x}-1, \ x \ \ge \ 1.\)

If by "what" you meant "what is the name" - one of the generic name is "series from geometric progression"

A "rube" goes up to a farmer and says, I'll work for you starting at a penny the first day and then doubling it each consecutive day for the next month (30 days). The farmer, thinking he has a live one, agrees. How much does the farmer owe the "hayseed" after 30 days?
