What is the average speed of the car from t=0 to t=5?
A car is stopped at a traffic light and begins to move forward along a straight road when the light turns green. The distance (in feet) traveled by the car in t seconds is given by S(t)= 2t^2 for 0 ? t ? 30
what is the average speed of the car from
a. t=0 to t=5?
b.t=5 to t=10?

how do you this because i have examples but really confused

This sort of exercise is customarily done with calculus, but you posted this as an algebra question, so you must have been given some other technique. Please reply with a clear explanation of what that technique is.

Thank you! :D

d(t)= 16t^2

d(x+h) - d(x) = 16 (x+h)^2 - 16x^2
-------------------- ----------------------------

d(x+h) - d(x) = 16(x+h)^2 - 16x^2
------------------- -----------------------------
(x+h) - x h

= 16( x^2 + 2xh + h^2) - 16x^2 = 16x^2 + 32xh + 16h^2 - 16x^2
-------------------------------------------
h
= 32xh +16h^2 = h( 32x+16h) = 32x +16h
-------------------- --------------------
h h

average speed= 32x + 16h
x= 3 = 32(3) +16(0.1)= 96+1.6 97.6
h= 0.1

this is the example they showed

average speed = change in distance/change in time

a. [S(5) - S(0)]/(5 - 0)

b. [S(10) - S(5)]/(10 - 5)

it's that simple.

Instantaneous speed requires calculus

Average speed is just evaluate subtract and divide - done with algebra skills.
