How do I figure out what the algebraic sequence that matches the pattern shown?

3, 9, 27....

well, first you look at the numbers and see what they have in common (all divisible by three) so then you say to yourself "self, is that increasing by 3 each time?" and then you say back to your self "no dummy" so then you think of something else that could apply, for example exponents (cough cough)
