A cargo net consists of multiple inter-linking strands of rope, what would the formula be to work out the overall break strength of the cargo net?

It is difficult to "estimate" the breaking of a net "with back of the envelope" calculations. You will need to know "rope material properties", method of inter-linking, load distribution. It is best to run some real life test or ask the manufacturer (they should give you "real life" test data.

the cargo net would be for general use and measures 1.5m x 2.5m with 0.12m spacing; the rope is 6mm with a breaking strain of 300kgs.

If I remember correctly, materials engineering was something you taught?

Yes - and that's why I do not talk about "failure strength of a structure" without knowing the details. When you put a "net" under load it will go into "large non-linear deformation" mode and quickly swamp a computer.
