what equation can I use to find domain and ranges

I find so difficult finding domain and ranges, could somebody please tell me what equation must be used to find domain and ranges

for example to find the domain and the range of the equation

f(x) = |x-4|+5


how would you solve it? what equation would you use?

Well, you don't necessarily need an equation, just logical thinking.
For instance on this equation, the domain is all the values x can be on the right side of equation right?
Are there any restrictions?
There isn't, is there.
So, the domain is x is all real numbers.

Now the range is all values that f(x) can be, right?
Are there any restrictions?
Yes, there is!
Since x-4 is an absolute value, it cannot be a negative value, right?
SO, the range has to be greater or equal to 5.

sadly, I'm still confused, I thought the domain was supposed to be any number which would make the result of the equation to be a number greater than 1.

Could you please explain me a little more about domain and ranges
