Let x = number of pages read the third hour
Then, x - 4 = number of pages read the second hour
and (x - 4) - 4 = number of pages read the first hour

He read 27 pages total in the three hours. So,

x + (x - 4) + [(x - 4) - 4] = 27

Solve for x......

He read some number of pages in the first hour. In the second hour, he read that number plus 4 more. The third hour, he read that number plus 8 more.

Subtract off the "more" amounts to find the "base" amount in the three hours.

Divide to find the base amount in just the first hour.
