I've been trying to do this problem for about 2 hours now and I just can't get it:

A survey of 900 workers in a plant indicated that:
500 owned houses
600 owned cars
345 owned boats
300 owned a house and a car
250 owned a house and a boat
270 owned a car and a boat
200 owned all three.

1. Draw a ven diagram
2. How many did not own anything?
3. How many owned only a car?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

How far have you gotten? You've drawn your rectangle, you've drawn the three overlapping circles inside, you've labelled them (maybe something like "H", "C", and "B"), you've put "200" in the overlap of all three circles, and... then what?

Please reply with a complete description. Thank you.

I've done everything like you've said and I keep getting negative numbers. I've tried subtracted the 500 houses from the 200 hundred that had all 3. Then I sutracted the 300 who owned a house and a car and that left me with zero and if I subtacted the 250 that owned a house and a car I got -250. The same thing with boats and car circles because if I subtract all the numbers that have to do with cars and boats (345-250-270-200=-375) The more I look at it the more confused I get. Am I even doing this right?

Do you see how pka came up with those numbers?.

It's a good idea to start in the center with the entry that includes all three

and work outward.

Then, use one that has two entries. For example, 270 own all three and

200 own a car and a boat; you would then put 70 in the 'car and boat'

space. 250 own a house and a boat, but 200 own all 3, so put 50 in the

'house and boat' space. We know that 345 own a boat, so what's left goes

in that space(345-(200+50+75)=25). Now, you have the boat circle filled.

I know they can be 'head-scratchers', but once you get started it'll fall

into place.
