Rather, you can say that (λ + 2)/6 = 1/4, since the ratios of components must be equal for parallel vectors. Another way to say it would be that (λ + 2)i + 1j = k(6i + 4j), so λ + 2 = 6k and 1 = 4k, for some nonzero real number k.
