i want to enter this expression
S=2 pi rh + 2 pi r^2
i am finding the surface area of a cylinder diameter
s = 2 pi x 2.5 x 8 + 2pi x 2.5^2
the diameter is 5 cm
the height is 8 cm
i am entering my expression incorrectly on the calculator
am i using the correct procedure to solve this problem
thank you for your help
this is the second time i have put this problem in the forum

s = 2 x pi x 2.5 x 8 + 2 x pi x 2.5^2 .. did you input those two "multiplication" operators?

Otherwise your equation is correct.

the diameter is 5 cm
the height is 8 cm

If you're looking for a decimal approximation for the surface area of this cylinder, then you can enter 3.1416 for Pi.

perhaps i should use the equation solver instead of derivative for this question??????

As I read it, you started this discussion to ask how to get your machine to evaluate the following expression.

2 * Pi * 2.5 * 8 + 2 * Pi * 2.5^2

You told us that your machine does not like the way you enter Pi.

I suggested that you enter the expression as:

2 * 3.1416 * 2.5 * 8 + 2 * 3.1416 * 2.5^2

The evaluation of this expression involves neither solving an equation nor calculating a derivative.

What exactly are you trying to do? :?

i am using the calculator that is provided on this website,not a machine
thank you for your help

You did not answer my question, and your original post makes no mention that you've been using one of the specialized "calculators" at this site. (Do you expect that people can read your mind? :wink: )

IF you are trying to evaluate the expression 2 * Pi * 2.5 * 8 + 2 * Pi * 2.5^2, THEN use a scientific calculator. They have buttons for both exponentiation and Pi.

Do you have access to a computer running Microsoft Windows? Windows comes with a scientific calculator "built-in".

Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Calculator

Under the View menu, select "Scientific". You'll need to use grouping symbols, too.

(I'm still not confident that I understand what it is exactly that you're trying to accomplish by employing special "calculators" that solve equations or determine derivatives because finding the surface area in square centimeters of a cylinder with given diameter 5cm and given height 8cm involves neither derivatives nor solving an equation.)

thank you very much for your help
it is greatly appreciated
i do not expect you to read my mind
i am struggling with geometry
i am an adult trying to earn my high school diploma
sometimes it is difficult to express what i need to know
thanks again for your help
