Hi Apollo:

In word problems, variables generally represent unknown quantities that we're asked to find.

Read the question in your exercise again: "How many counselors and how many aides should the camp hire … ?"

Can you see that there are two unknown quantities?

Can you do part (a) now?

Once you finish part (a), we can move on to part (b).
