my attempt at this one was so ugly, well, here is where I got without looking too foolish.
At 1pm ship A is 25 km due north of ship B. If ship A is sailing west at a rate of 16 km/h and ship B is sailing south at 20 km/h, at what rate is the distance between them changing at 1:30pm?
Distance between A and B = 25 miles

Triangle diagram

a=25km,v_1=16km/h,a_2=?,v_2=20km/h
a^2+b^2=c^2
2a a ?+2b b ?=2c c ?

1:00 to 1:30 is 1/2 hour.

D = distance between boats

D^2 = (16t)^2 + (25+20t)^2

Find dD/dt and evaluate at t = 1/2.

bcddd2144,

Exactly what is the name of this class you are taking - from whence all these problems are being assigned??
