Two friends leave the same restaurant and drive in opposite directions. One goes east at 55km/h and the other goes west at 60km/h. How long will it take them to be 427km apart? Give the answer in hours and minutes.

well, if they both leave at the same time, then you can add their two speeds togeather.

You can set that speed equal to the distace you are looking for. Don't forget your units.

I'm assuming that the two friends leave the restaurant at the same time. So, they will each travel the same amount of time....let's cal that t hours.

The first person is traveling at 55 km/hr, so in t hours, that person will travel 55t km.

The second person is traveling at 60 km/hr, so in t hours, the second person will travel 60t km.

They are going in OPPOSITE directions, so the distance between them will be the SUM of the distances traveled by each of them.

We want to know when they are 427 km apart....

distance traveled by 1st person + distance traveled by 2nd person = 427 km

55t + 60t = 427

Solve for t. Convert the decimal answer you get into hours and minutes.
