Translations: can '4 down, 4 right' be done in one step?

John says if you have to slide a figure 4 squares down and 4 squares to the right you have to count that as two seperate slides. Teyla says, no you can do it all at once, its like going southeast on a map. Do you agree?

I agree with John that you would go four down and then four to the right, but I am still a little unsure. Please help!

Have you drawn a sketch? Start at a point. Label it A. Now, go down 4 inches and label that point B. Now, go to the right 4 inches and label the end point C. Now, start over from point A. Is there another route to get from A to C without going to B first? How many ways are there? Is there one shortest route? What is it?
