You put this under Arithmetic. Should we take that to mean you can't use algebra, which is the natural method to use? If so, then you might use trial and error, perhaps starting with the guess that the distance is as far as he could go in one hour at 50 mph. (That will not be the correct answer.)

In fact, trial and error can help you think about the problem even if you eventually write an equation or two.
 
You know that the distance going from school to home is the same as going from home to school.

You are given the rates each way and the total time spend traveling.

You also know that distance = rate*time
