In 2003 the federal funding for HeadStart Programs increased by $0.13 billion from the previous year. The increase from 2003 to 2004 was $0.10 billion. Over the 3 year period 2002-2004, the total funding was $19.98 billion. What was the federal HeadStart funding for each of these years?

Now I tried adding .13 and .10 billion then subtracting it from 19.98 billion then dividing the answer 19.75 by 3 and getting 6.583 but got lost from there. My teacher gives us problems where we can look in the back of the book and the answer is: 2002: $6.54 billion 2003: $6.67 billion 2004: $6.77 billion and I don't understand how off I am from 6.58 and 6.54 so where is the .04 that I'm missing??? I'm so confused.

Assume that

funding for 2002 was = x

Then what was funding for 2003?

Then what was funding for 2004?

Add all those up and equate to 19.98.

Then solve for 'x' and rest of the problem.....
