The problem is - Six is subtracted from a number. Then the result is divided by 4. The new result is added to 10 to give a final result of 30. What is the number? My daughter said the answer was 86 and the teacher marked it wrong. What do you think? Is 86 the incorrect answer? Thank you.

Ok...

Let x = the number

"six is subtracted from a number"
x- 6

The result is divided by 4
(x - 6)/4

The new result is added to 10

10 + (x - 6)/4

to give a final result of 30.

10 + (x - 6)/4 = 30

Did you (or your daughter?) check to see if HER result of 86 satisfied the conditions of the problem?

If 86 satisfies the conditions of the problem, your daughter should get credit for this answer. Your daughter's teacher may have expected to see some WORK to substantiate the answer...hard to say.

What does "said" mean: did it in her head?!
HOW did your daughter arrive at 86? (86 is correct).
