If you had 34 tables each with 19 plates of ham. There were 73 plates, each with 26 plates of roast beef, and there were 104 tables, each with 27 plates of vegetables. How many plates are needed just to serve the ham, beef and vegetables?

They want to know how many plates there are in total.

Work each section the same way.

There are 34 "ham" tables. Each of these tables is covered with 19 plates of ham. How MANY plates of ham are there all together?

Well, you could start adding all of the plates, on each of these 34 tables.

19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19 + 19

:idea: OR, you could use multiplication.

Adding thirty-four 19s together is the same as multiplying 19 by 34.

19 × 34 = ?

Do you know how to do that ?

Follow the same method, to figure out how many plates cover 73 tables in the "beef" section, when there's 26 plates on each of those 73 tables.

Do the same with 27 plates of vegetables on each of 104 tables.

You'll have three subtotals. Add them together.

Total Number of Ham Plates + Total Number of Beef Plates + Total Number of Vegetable Plates

The grand total is the number of plates needed to serve all of that ham, beef, and vegetables.

Please show your work, if you would like more help.

Thank you I understand now for example
19x34= 646
26x73=1,898
27x104= 2,808

then add all of them togethe 646
1898
+ 2808
_________
5352 plates

Your work is all correct. :D

By the way, if that dinner is a political fundraiser charging $2,500 per plate, then a sold-out event will raise $13,380,000.

5352 × 2500 = 13380000

In the United States, that's almost enough money to purchase three Senators' votes.
