the definition of sine, cosine, etc

I am just beginning in calculus and have no idea what sin or cos is and can't seem to find them anywhere. Could someone help please?

I have this problem to solve h(x)=1/sin x- 1/2
or wrtten out h(x)= 1 over sin x - 1 half

If you've been placed in a trig-based calculus course without ever having taken trig, then you might want to consider conferencing with your academic advisor regarding better course placement.
