Hello everyone. I'm new to this community so its nice to meet anyone who reads this thread. I am stuck on this word problem. I'm helping a student with this problem but I'm so stuck and don't know how to set it up. The problem is as follows:
A band sold t youth tickets at $5.50 per ticket and 100 adult tickets at $7.00 per ticket. How much money did the band collect from ticket sales?

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help me with this one. :D

I have two set ups for this problem but I'm not sure if it's right. Here they are:

t(5.50) + 100(7.00) = 0 or t(5.50) - 100(7.00) = 0

It is far better to ask the student to come here directly for help. Transmission of problem or answer is frequently impaired when going through a third party. Most importantly, by talking directly to the student and seeing what the student has done or at least considered, we may be able to idenntify exactly where he or she is having a conceptual difficulty.

The problem as expressed does not have a numeric answer. It has only a symbolic answer. Of course, this may just mean that the problem is not stated completely and exactly.

It would greatly help to know where generally the student is in his or her mathematical education because an answer suitable for an eighth grader may not be suitable for a college sophmore and vice versa. It would also help to know the specific course being studied and what topic is currently being addressed.

The student is a high school student, studying Algebra 2, using the book Algebra and Trigonometry, Structure and Method. The material is from chapter 1.

If the problem is as you say, the answer is 5.5t + 700.
