I know the total number and I know the sales tax rate. How do I find what number plus tax rate equals total number.

For example sales tax rate is 7.25%.
Total number is $6125.
What would the starting number?

x + 7.25%= $6,125

Thanks for the help!

Isn't the tax some percentage of some other value? If you are using "x" to stand for the unknown pre-tax value, how might this relate to the tax on the pre-tax value? :wink:

Re: Sales Tax Question

You are right it is a 7.25% of some other value however I can not figure out how to get to this value.

For example if I take the total and subtract the 7.25% it gives me a number that when I add the 7.25% back in does not come up to the total.

Show us in numbers what you are talking about - we can help better.

Re: Sales Tax Question

The numbers I gave you are actual.

As you can probably tell this is a retail, sales question.

(Retail price-This is what I need) + (plus sales tax of 7.75%) = (a total price including sales tax of) $6125

Re: Sales Tax Question

Mechanics are:
x + .0725x = 6125
1.0725x = 6125
x = 6125 / 1.0725 (as per galactus)

Isn't this is what you named "x"...?

"Plus seven and three-quarters percent" of what...? Isn't this 7.75% of the pre-tax value...? What expression, in terms of "x" and "0.075", means "7.75% of the pre-tax value"?
