"A tangent line to y=square root x passes through point (-3,1). Determine the point on the curve which it must be joined."

I found the m value of the tangent line 1/2(squareroot x) and then i plugged it into y=mx+b but I don't know where to go from there because the point they give has a negative x value which cannot be square rooted so I cannot find the b value.

The exercise doesn't say that the tangent line is tangent at the specified point, only that it passes through that point. The tangent line will pass through infinitely-many points which are not on the curve. ;)
