1) Why are you subtracting mixed numbers?

2) I am amazed at your description. It is very oddly specific. Do you think every new problem type is a completely new experience? Sadly, many are of this impression and do not know that they can apply all other things they have learned to a slight variation on what they know already.

Do you know how to subtract?
Do you know how to borrow?
Do you know what fractions are equivalent?

That's all you need.

Hint:
6 + (3/10) = 5 + 1 + (3/10) = 5 + (10/10) + (3/10) = 5 + (13/10)

Write each mixed number as an improper fraction:

6 3/10 is 63/10

2 7/10 is 27/10

Ok...

Now you have

(63/10) - (27/10)
(63 - 27) / 10

You can do that, right???

NO borrowing necessary!

6 3/10 - 2 7/10

Another way:

Step 1: handle the whole numbers: 6 - 2 = 4

Step 2: handle the fractions: 3/10 - 7/10 = (3 - 7) / 10 = -4/10 = -2/5

4 - 2/5 = 3 3/5

REMEMBER: a/x - b/x = (a - b) / x
