for each function f, find and simplify the difference quotient:

f(x+h)-f(x)
-----------
h

f(x) = 4-2x

this is what i thought i had to do
f(x+h) =4 -2(x+h)
-f(x) -(4-2x) = -4 +2x 4-2x+h-4+2x/h simply i get h/h this is not right I'm stuck

f(x+h) = 4 - 2(x+h) Okay.

-f(x) = -(4-2x) = -4 +2x Fixed with insertion of equals sign

(4-2x > > +h < < -4+2x)/h

simply i get h/h this is not right I'm stuck

Highlighted in the arrows should be "-2h."

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{f(x + h) - f(x)}{h} \ = \ \)

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{4 - 2(x + h) - 4 + 2x}{h} \ = \ \)

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{4 - 2x - 2h - 4 + 2x}{h} \ = \ \)

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{-2h}{h} \ = \ \)

\(\displaystyle \boxed{-2}\)
