Dividing 5/6 by 5/3 is the same as multiplying 5/6 by the reciprocal of 5/3

(The reciprocal is what you're thinking about, when you say, "it changes to 3/5").

Multiply 5/6 times 3/5, then add 3/7 to the result.

3> 4+u over -5= ? What does this equal sign mean ?

I think you're supposed to solve for u. The solutions for u comprise an interval. Your answer should look something like one of the following.

u < something

or

u > something

If you need to refresh your memory on doing arithmetic with fractions, please check out THIS SITE.

------------------------------------------------------------

3 > (4 + u)/(-5)

Did you append the equal sign at the end yourself? I'm thinking that it does not belong there, so I left it off.

With this inequality, you could start by "clearing the fraction" (i.e., get rid of the ratio on the right).

We do this by multiplying both sides of the inequality by the ratio's denominator: -5.

You must remember that, whenever we multiply (or divide) both sides of an inequality by a negative number, we have to reverse the direction of the inequality symbol.

(-5)(3) < (-5)(4 + u)/(-5)

If you would like more help with anything, please ask specific questions, or show what you're doing.

8-) Cheers

"3/5" already means "three-fifths," so you do not attach "ths" to it.
