It took me a minute to figure out what your working was showing because of that spurious equals sign (900 most definitely does not equal 300(0.05) + 600(0.09)), but I agree with your work. In order for the work to be "grammatically" correct, you could write C(900)=..., where C(x) is a function defining the commission paid on a purchase of x dollars. That aside, your answer is the correct one, and the book is wrong. Remember that the people who write the textbook answer keys are just people too, so they make mistakes sometimes. Apparently it's quite common for the textbook manufacturers to "outsource" the answer keys to students, in exchange for pizza or some other bribe. That goes far to explain why some answer keys are just riddled with errors...
