The following story problem is really got me confused so any help is appreicated.

If income tax is $3502 plus 28% of taxable income over $23,000, how much is the income tax on a taxable income of $35,000?

i did the problem this way: 35000*.28=9800 + 3502= 13302 and i was told it was wrong.

is this the correct way of doing it: 23000 * .28=6440 + 3502=9942

28% is the tax on whatever is greater than 23000;
in other words, .28*(35000 - 23000) + 3502 is the total tax.

I'll never ask you to calculate my taxes!

Thank you for the help...But your RUDE comment is not needed.

Relax, Mister Williams; can't tell that's a joke?

You had these 2 amounts:
35000*.28=9800 + 3502= 13302
23000 * .28=6440 + 3502= 9942

13302 - 6862 = 6440
9942 - 6862 = 3080

What I was saying is if that was my taxes,
I would have had to pay $6440 or $3080 too much;
so I'd ask someone else to do my taxes; get it?
