I was given a mini project for a statistics class I am taking. I have some ideas, but I am not sure if I am looking at it the right way. Here it goes...

The Comets and the Barons are two evenly matched teams. Each has an equally likely chance of winning a game. Suppose the two teams are in a playoff series that is won by winning two out of three games.

1) Make a tree diagram and list the sample space for the possible outcomes of the series.

2) What is the probability that the Barons will win the series?

3) What is the probablity that the Barons will win the first two games?

4) What is the probability that the Comets will win two straight games?

5) What is the probability that the Comets will win at least one game?

6) What is the probability that the Comets will win the last two games?

I know how to make a tree diagram and I am guessing that there is 6 outcomes which I think are:

Win= W Lose= L (WW,LL,WLW,LWW,WLL,LWL) or are they CC,BB and so on any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks to me like you have it, with a little more clear definition.

You have, "W = Win" but you don't specify who wins. That's sort fo what you were getting at with "CC,BB", but that only specifies a team and not who wins.

If you go with what you have

WW,LL,WLW,LWW,WLL,LWL

But change the definition to W = Comets Win, L = Comets Lose, I think you are just about done.

It was good of you to note that WWW and LLL are not in the Sample Space.

Ok, but what I am wondering is .... does the probability change from .5 to something else as each game is played? and I need help on how this tree may look

NO! "Each has an equally likely chance of winning a game."

Right. Games are independent, so that Pr(Winning one game|Already won one game) = Pr(winning one game)

ok can someone tell me if I am at least on the right track....

the probability that the Barons will win the first two games is .5*.5= .25

The probability the Barons will win the series is .5

The probability that the Comets will win two straight games is .5

The probaility the Comets will win at least one game is ?

The probability that the Comets will win the last two games is .5*.5=.25?

Look at the table TKH gave you.
WW,LL,WLW,LWW,WLL,LWL

4) What is the probability that the Comets will win two straight games?
How mant WWs are there out of the six possibilities?

5) What is the probability that the Comets will win at least one game?

How many of them have NO Ws? That is the probability that they will NOT win at least one so 1 minus that probability is the probability that they will.

The probability that the Comets will win at least one game is 1-1/6 is 5/6 is that right?
