I dont know how to start solving this:

Mr. Anders and Ms. Rich each drove home from a Chicago business trip. Mr. Anders traveled east a 100km per hour and Ms.Rich traveled west at 80 km per hour. In how many hours were they 1000km apart?

mcw13:

Have you learned the famous formula that lets us write a distance as a product of rate and elapsed time?

For example, if I travel at a rate of 55 kph for t hours, then the number of kilometers that I've traveled can be expressed symbolically as 55t.

In your exercise, express each of the two distances (one for Mr. Anders and one for Ms. Rich) in terms of t hours, and then form an equation by adding those two expressions set equal to the total required distance-apart.

Solve the equation for t, to find out how many hours it takes for them to be 1,000 km apart.

mcw13,

yes, start a new topic in a different thread.

By the way, this problem is flawed. The problem must explicitly state the equivalent of that each person
starting driving away \(\displaystyle \ at \ the \ same \ time.\)
