Are you just starting to solve these types of equations? First, add 5 to both sides of the equation in order to isolate the variable x on the left side. -5+x+5=9+5 Combine terms. x=14 That's it. Pretty simple, huh? You can check by substituting 14 for x in the original equation and see that \(\displaystyle -5+14=9\)
