I am new at Algebra and I need help. I am not understanding how to write equations such as :
write the equation in standard form satisfying the conditions slope= -1/2 y intercept= -4
I am so totally lost!!
Thank you for any help!

You posted your question at the end of somebody else's discussion. To start your own discussion in the future, please click the NEW TOPIC button at the upper-left area of the Beginning Algebra board's index.

This exercise is really not much more than substituting two given values into one formula, and then rearranging that formula into another form.

Somebody should have taught you the following two forms (among others) for the equation of a line.

y = mx + b

Ax + By = C

The former is called Slope-Intercept Form, where m and b are any Real numbers; the latter is called Standard Form, where A, B, and C are integers and A is positive.

The symbol m represents the slope, and the symbol b represents the y-intercept. Both of these are constants.

Your exercise gave you these constants. Substitute them into the Slope-Intercept Form.

Now, use algebra to rearrange the resulting equation so that both the x- and y-terms are on one side, and the remaining number is on the other.

Multiply both sides by whatever value necessary to get the coefficient on x to be the smallest positive integer possible.

You now have an equation in the form Ax + By = C.

You're done.

I'll do an example problem for you:

write the equation in standard form satisfying the conditions slope= -3/4 y intercept= -6

So we have

m = -3/4

b = -6

In the slope intercept form (y = mx + b):

y = - 3/4 * x - 6

For standard form

y = - 3/4 * x - 6

y + 3/4 *x = - 6

3 * x + 4 * y = -24
